In this instalment, the Stanwell ladies attend a much anticipated evening of supper, cards, music...and the latest gossip! Click on the banner below to go to the blog, and you can catch up with Chapter 1 there as well. A new instalment is posted every Monday. Happy reading!
In other news, I will be launching the 2012 National Year of Reading for the Bayside Library Service at Brighton Library on the 14th February (St. Valentines Day) from 2-3pm. The event is free, but the library asks that you book via the Try booking service so that they have numbers for afternoon tea. If you are in the Melbourne area, I hope to see you there.
And remember, if you are more of a Facebook user, you can keep up to date with all my news via my FB Page. Just click on the icon above and Like my page.

Hi Everyone,
My mother, sister and I are heading to the 2012 Jane Austen Festival Australia this coming April and, for a bit of fun, I am writing an original Regency serial titled Trust and Tribulation for the festival blog. The serial will be posted every Monday for ten weeks and will follow the adventures of Anthea Stanwell and her sister as they learn about love and life at a Regency house party. It's a hoot to write and, I hope, a lot of fun to read. The serial will culminate in a competition to write the final instalment, however entry is only open to season ticket holders of the 2012 Jane Austen Festival Australia.
I have posted the first instalment on the JAFA blog so click on the Trust and Tribulation banner below to read Chapter 1. I hope you enjoy it and if you are a ticket holder, maybe you will be inspired to release your inner Jane Austen or Georgette Heyer!
Cheers,
Alison
Hello All,
Happy New Year!
It has been an exciting start of the year for me - I am at the final stage of negotiations for a new three book series to be published in the US. It is a historical/supernatural series and will need a lot of research, so the pub dates we are discussing are quite a long way off. However, there will be short stories and other smaller projects to whet your appetite along the way, so keep an eye on this page or my FB fan page for updates (you can like my fan page via the button above).
I feel obliged to wait until all the negotiations have been completed before I give more details about the books, but it shouldn't be long now and then I will be able to let you know all about them. I am SO excited, and have already planned a big research trip in April/May. I have also hired a local historical costumer to sew me a wardrobe of clothes from the period so that I can make my author appearances in historically accurate outfits! Choosing the styles and fabrics has been so much fun. I will be posting photos of me all dressed up as the clothes are completed, so keep an eye out for that too. Should be a giggle!
Since Christmas, I've been reading lots of books on my brand new Kindle. So far, I am loving my new gadget. It took me a few days to get used to the smaller reading space on the screen, but now I am flying. At the moment most of my reading is for research, but for relaxation, I am reading Diana Gabaldon's new novel, The Scottish Prisoner, and enjoying it immensely.
Below is a pic of me at my friend's New Years Eve party raising my glass of lemonade (I was designated driver) to bring in 2012. I raise that glass to you and your family too and wish you a very happy New Year!

Cheers,
Alison
Hi All,
I am thrilled to announce that EONA has been voted a "Best I've Read 2011" book. The "Best I've Read" is an annual event organised by ten reviewing blogs who choose the best books they have read for the year, and celebrate them with author interviews, blogs and giveaways. The lovely gals at Pageturners have voted EONA as one of their top reads for 2011 and they have posted an interview with me on their blog. There is the chance to win a giveaway too! If you would like to view the entire "Best I've Read 2011" list and events, click on the button below:
In other news, I have just created an official "Alison Goodman" Page on Facebook. It is brand new and looking a little lonely, so if you have a moment, it would be great if you could visit via the F button at top right and register a "like". I will be posting regularly on FB (as well as here, as per usual) and, although I can't give any details yet, there are some exciting announcements brewing that I will be able to share in the New Year. So, stay tuned!
My very best wishes to you for a happy festive season.
Cheers for now,
Alison
Hi Everyone,
I'm back home again, after a fabulous trip to New York Comic Con, and the World Fantasy Convention in San Diego. I've posted some pics in my Gallery, although it seems quite a lot of them are of the famous (or should that be infamous) Australian party at the Con! WFC was such a good time and I got to hang out with a host of fabulous authors including Garth Nix, Sean Williams and the gals from Heroines of Fantasy who have asked me to guest blog next year.
New York Comic Con was amazing too - so many people, so many costumes, and again I got to meet some fab authors including Patricia Briggs and Kim Harrison. Below is a snap of me signing books at Comic Con with my wonderful publisher, Sharyn November, looking on. Behind me in the blue t-shirt (and holding a copy of EONA!) is Patty Briggs. I've got to say, this photo looks a bit like a convention of red-heads. Viva la bloodnuts!

In other news, the German edition of EONA has just been released and below is the great cover. Pretty cool, huh? I'm loving the man's face in the sword. But is it Kygo or Ido? Maybe that depends on how you read the story...

Cheers for now,
Alison
Hi Everyone,
The reading/panel event at Books of Wonder on Saturday (22nd) was a blast. It was great to meet up with fellow authors Scott Westerfeld, Jeff Hirsch, Gabrielle Zevin, Maryrose Wood, Jon Skovron, and Sarah Beth Durst. The audience was large and appreciative, and some of Scott's fans turned up in fabulous Steampunk costumes. Below is a pic of the line-up, with the fabulous Peter Glassman, owner of Books of Wonder.

From left (back) Jeff Hirsch, Maryrose Wood, yours truly, Peter Glassman, Jon Skovron. From left (front) Sarah Beth Durst, Scott Westerfled and Gabrielle Zevin.
I've only got a couple more days in New York City. Today I'll be shooting an interview vid for the Penguin US on-line team, and tomorrow I'm doing some more research at The Met for my new series. The Met is amazing - I've already spent two full days there and probably only seen about 5% of its collection. On Wednesday we head off to San Diego for the World Fantasy Con. I'll be sad to say goodbye to NYC, but, hey, I'm heading to California and a world class Con! Keep an eye on this page for pics and goss from the nexus of the fantasy writing world!
Cheers for now,
Alison
Hi All,
WOW! Comic Con New York was amazing! It was great to meet so many fans and avid readers, and I had a ball discussing fantasy writing alongside Pat Briggs, Kim Harrison, and Kristen Painter to name just a few of the terrific women authors on the panel.
I am also doing an extra New York panel and signing this coming Saturday 22nd October at Books of Wonder, 18th West 18th Street, from 12.00-2.00pm with Scott Westerfeld,
Maryrose Wood, Jeff Hirsch, Sarah Beth Durst, Jon Skovron, Gabrielle Zevin. Hope to see you there.
Cheers,

II'm loving New York - what a fantastic city. Still jet-lagged, of course, and waking up at weird times but it's kind of nice to watch dawn brighten the New York sky from my apartment window.
I've got some more details about my appearances at New York Comic Con. As well as the Sunday panel and signing session, I'm now also doing a signing session on Saturday 15th from 2.00 - 3.00pm at the Penguin Booth #1145.
On Sunday, the panel is from 2.30pm, then I'm signing books from 4.00pm - 4.50pm alongside Patricia Briggs at the Penguin Booth #1145. The panel details are:
WE'RE NO ANGELS: Leading Ladies of SF/F
2:30pm-3:30pm
Room 1A23
Beware the women of Sci-Fi/Fantasy and their kick-ass heroines. Danger just might be these girls' middle names. But no amount of bad guys can keep these ladies from doing what's right. Whether standing up for friends and family, or just plain kicking some ass, these girls don't shy away from a fight. Femmes Fatales on the panel include: Patricia Briggs, Alison Goodman, Kim Harrison, Jeaniene Frost, Sabrina Benulis and Kristen Painter.
Entry to New York Comic Con is required to attend the panel.
I'm also doing a panel titled "Fantastic Fiction" at Books of Wonder on Saturday 22nd October from 12pm-2pm with Scott Westerfeld, Maryrose Wood, Jeff Hirsch, Sarah Beth Durst, Jon Skovron, and Gabrielle Zevin.
In other news, the French translation of EONA has just been released under the title EONA et le Collier Des Dieux which translates as EONA and the Necklace of the Gods.

Hi All,
Some breaking news: I will be making an appearance at New York Comic Con in mid October! The day and time are yet to be confirmed, but I will most likely be signing books at the Penguin booth for a few hours, and I might be doing a panel too.
I'm so excited to be going to Comic Con New York. I was a guest at the Sydney and Perth Supanovas - an Australian version of Comic Con - and I had such a great time. As you can see in the photos below, I also had some brilliant starstruck moments. As a big Buffy fan, chatting to James Marsters on the guest bus about philosophy and relationships has to be one of the most surreal moments of my life!
From the left, yours truly with the delightful Barbara Eden (I Dream of Jeannie), James Marsters (Spike from Buffy...OMG!), and Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter series).
For UK readers, EONA is now available under the UK title The Necklace of the Gods in both paperback and Kindle editions. A YA edition - titled EONA: Return of the Dragoneye - is also available.
EON and EONA are also finally available as e-books in the US. The Australian e-books are still on their way.
So what are EON and EONA all about? For a quick overview, check out the brilliant book trailer for the US editions below. Or, if you'd like to read the first chapter of EON, you can download it as a pdf from the EON page. The Preface and Chapter 1 of EONA, the concluding sequel, is available from the EONA page, but beware, it does contain spoilers for the first book!
Finally, I have started work on a new series! If you would like to keep up-to-date about my new project, plus all the EON and EONA news (there is some exciting stuff in the works), I invite you to sign up for my free quarterly newsletter at the Sign Up button above.

Hi All,
WOW! Supanova Perth was fantastic. Danny and his fabulous Supanova crew certainly know how to put on a great weekend. I signed and chatted to fans and avid readers non-stop, and by Sunday afternoon the Dymocks booth had sold out of EON and EONA. Sorry to those who missed out on buying their copies at the Expo. However, for those in or around the Busselton area in WA, Dymocks Busselton has some signed books available if you're quick.
I met so many lovely people at the Sydney and Perth Supanovas - fans, crew and of course the other guests. As you can see in the photos below, I had some brilliant starstruck moments. And, as a big Buffy fan, chatting to James Marsters on the guest bus about philosophy and relationships may be one of the most surreal moments of my life! Fellow fans...yes, he is just as gorgeous in real life, and a really nice guy.

Above is yours truly with the delightful Barbara Eden (I Dream of Jeannie), James Marsters (Spike from Buffy...OMG!), and Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter series).

And here I am with Corin Nemec (Stargate SG-1), Rebecca Moesta and Kevin J. Anderson (SF authors), and Bevan McGuiness (fellow Aussie fantasy author).
In other news, EONA reached #5 on the May 8th New York Times Bestseller List, and then EON, the first book in the duology, reached #10 on the May 29 NYTB List. It has been such a thrill. A huge thank-you to everyone who is helping the series reach such heights.
For UK readers, EONA is now available under the UK title The Necklace of the Gods in both paperback and Kindle editions. A YA edition - titled EONA: Return of the Dragoneye - will be published in August. For those in the UK looking for the first book of the duology, it has been published under the title The Two Pearls of Wisdom, or the YA edition as EON: Rise of the Dragoneye.

Hi All,
I had a blast as a guest at Sydney Supanova last weekend. As you can see from the photos above, I also got to meet some of my fave stars - left to right is yours truly with Sean Maher from Firefly and Serenity, Amy Acker from Angel and Dollhouse, and Larry Hagman from
I Dream of Jeannie and Dallas. All lovely people and loads of fun.
I'm also a guest at Perth Supanova this coming weekend (25th-26th June) at Claremont Showgrounds. I'll be signing books and chatting to fans at the Dymocks Booth, so if you are going to the Expo, don't be shy - do come over and say hi. The lovely people at the Dymocks booth will be doing some great deals on books including a special Supanova price if you buy my latest novels EON and EONA together. You'll also get to meet other Fantasy and SF authors including Marianne De Pierres, Kevin J. Anderson and Jennifer Fallon. Hope to see you there!

I'm heading over to the World Fantasy Convention in San Diego in October. I don't get to the US very often, so I'm hoping I'll also be able to do a book tour. If you live in the US and would like to get your copies of EON and EONA signed and meet me for a chat, then I'm going to be a bit cheeky and ask that you let my publisher know that you think a US tour is a good idea. You can check out how to be heard in the "2011 Appearances" box to your left. And remember to let my publisher know which city or major town you live near. Thanks!

Hi All,
EONA is now officially released in North America and Australia! Yaaay!
To celebrate the launch, I have been invited to guest blog at Penguin.com (usa) for the whole of this week. Here are the links (so far):
Monday's blog. "Talisman books", about those books that move us.
Tuesday's blog. "Mad as a cut snake", about favourite sayings.
Wednesday's blog. "Those unreal men in my life", a light-hearted look at the inspiration behind Lord Ido.
Thursday's blog. "Inspiration is kind of like love", about what inspired EON and EONA.
Friday's blog. "Sword lessons and the fall of silk", about my research for EON and EONA and some of the fascinating experiences and facts that I came across.
If you have a moment, drop by the blog and maybe join in with a comment or two.
Also, just arrived is the brilliant book trailer for the US edition of EONA. Check it out below - I love it!

Hi All,
My friend Trudi Canavan, author of the bestselling Black Magician series, officially launched the Australian edition of EONA yesterday. The launch was held at Glenfern, a grand old National Trust property that has been developed into writer's studios, and a luscious afternoon tea was supplied by my lovely family and friends. Thanks, guys!

Me and Trudi at the launch of EONA
Also, huge thanks to Trudi for a wonderful speech, and thanks to all those who came along and gave EONA, the sequel to EON (previously published as The Two Pearls of Wisdom), such a warm welcome into the world. It was a great afternoon. For more launch photos check out the Gallery, and for those readers in Melbourne who may be after a signed copy of EONA, the wonderful Avenue Bookstore in Albert Park has signed copies of both EON and EONA available.
If you'd like to read the preface and chapter 1 of EONA, you can download it as a pdf from the EONA page. Just look for the chapter 1 icon. I've also posted some early reviews. If you are new to the series, you can read chapter 1 of EON, the first book, on the EON page.
EONA will be officially released in the US on April 19, and in the UK under the title The Necklace of The Gods in May. A lovely YA edition titled EONA: Return of the Dragoneye will also be available in the UK in August. You can see all of the great covers down the right side of this page. An author friend recently told me that she has serious cover envy, and I've got to say, I've been so lucky with all of my covers. Every one of them, for both EON and EONA, has been brilliant. So my sincere thanks to all the wonderful artists who have worked on them.
Cheers,
Alison
Great Review of EON and EONA
(also known as The Two Pearls of Wisdom and The Necklace of the Gods)
and Indonesian deal
26th March, 2011
Hi All,
EON and EONA have just been reviewed in the April edition of Goodreading Magazine and it is the kind of review that an author dreams about! I've posted it below although, for the sake of space, I have cut out two paragraphs that give a brief description of each book's storyline (if you do want to read the entire review, I have posted it on the EONA page):
In some ways it's difficult to write a proper, thoughtful review of these two novels. That's because, from the first page, I became like Bastian opening the covers of The Neverending Story - or perhaps even like a 10-year-old reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for the first time. Everything material in my life ceased to exist while I was immersed in Goodman's world of dragons and power and pearls. To say it was engrossing would be an understatement. The kids were hurried off to school, my work was put to one side, washing piled up, the beds went unmade.
The books are set in an imagined land that is something like medieval China or Japan, and Goodman created the magic from the folklore and history of both of these countries. In the first novel, she introduces Eona, a teenage girl disguised as a young boy and known to all as 'Eon'...The tension surrounding Eona's disguise is woven into the bigger story of greed and an impending war over claims to the throne, and many questions about loyalty, power, morality, and corruption are asked as the book progresses. The second novel sees Eona come into her power and face a dilemma about whether she should be using it for war.
The wonderful thing about these books is the way in which Goodman creates her world while you read her story. There are no long passages of information or explanation; I learned the rules of dragon lore and the customs of the land almost subconsciously, as I hurriedly turned the pages to find out what would happen next.
These books are marketed to older teenagers in some markets and as fantasy novels in others. If the thought of a story about teenagers and dragons puts you off, ask yourself if you made an exception about children's fantasy books in order to read the 'Harry Potter' series. If you did, I strongly recommend The Two Pearls of Wisdom (published in some parts of the world as Eon) and Eona. They are cracking good stories.
—Reviewed by Sarah Minns.
As you can imagine, I am thrilled with that! If you would like to read the start of EONA, you can download the Preface and Chapter 1 from the EONA page. Just look for the download link under the Chapter 1 icon. And remember, in Australia the first book of the duology used to be titled The Two Pearls of Wisdom, but it has now been re-released as EON (and at half the price!).
In other good news, EON and EONA will soon be published in Indonesia! Hikmah Publishing House has negotiated translation rights, and as soon as I have the release dates I will post them on this page.
Cheers,
Alison
Hi All,
In April, my new novel EONA, the sequel to EON (aka The Two Pearls of Wisdom), will be released. If you would like to read a preview of EONA, you can download the Preface and Chapter 1 from the EONA page under Books. Just look for the download link under the Chapter 1 icon. For those who prefer to wait, EONA will be out in bookstores early to mid April 2011, depending on where you are.
I've also recently learned that the Junior Library Guild has chosen EONA as one of their 2011 books! Of the nearly 200,000 books published each year, the Guild chooses 3,000 to review and only around 350 make it on to their list, so I am very honoured that EONA has been chosen.
And another bit of great news - EONA has also been chosen as one of the top 50 Spring release books on the 2011Indie Next List Preview. Here is the review that accompanied the listing:
When you’ve been anticipating a book as much as I have this one, there’s a good chance that you will be disappointed. Happily, Goodman’s sequel to the stellar Eon definitely does not disappoint! Facing the ultimate battle for control of the land she calls home, Eona finds herself waging an internal battle every bit as devastating as the war threatening to break out across the kingdom. Goodman’s characters and her world-building talents are exceptionally strong, and I was very sorry to see this saga end. —Billie Bloebaum, Powell’s Books at PDX, Portland, OR
Gotta love that!
Cheers,
Alison
P.S. In Australia, EON was previously published as The Two Pearls of Wisdom. The sequel will no longer be titled The Necklace of the Gods as advertised at the end of that earlier edition. It will be published as EONA.
Hi All,
Happy Chinese New Year; may the Year of the Rabbit bring you good fortune and happiness.
I am looking forward to a very exciting 2011. In April, my new novel EONA, the sequel to EON (aka The Two Pearls of Wisdom) will be released. If you would like to read a preview of EONA, you can download the Preface and Chapter 1 from the EONA page under Books. Just look for the download link under the Chapter 1 icon (SPOILER ALERT: be aware that the Preface and Chapter 1 download contains spoilers for those who may be about to read EON for the first time).
For those who prefer to wait, EONA will be out in bookstores mid April 2011.
Cheers,
Alison
